I Wish I Knew This BEFORE I Became a Homemaker:  Simple Sustainable Habits for Homemaking Success

“The ultimate key to providing a nurturing environment in your home is you.”  I read this quote by Sally Clarkson the other day and it resonated with me. As homemakers, we get to create a safe haven where our families can feel loved, celebrated, and thrive. Your presence is key!  Whether you are just starting or you have been a homemaker for a while, managing a home is a skill we learn and it can sometimes feel overwhelming. I have been there, I know what it feels like. This is why I want to share some of the things that I wish I had known when I became a homemaker. These habits have helped me simplify my home and create a peaceful haven for my family.

Create a Simple Laundry Routine

The first habit that has been a game-changer for me is creating a simple laundry routine. Instead of letting the laundry pile up and become overwhelming, I wash, dry, fold, and put away all in one go. This helps keep my home tidy and frees up mental space knowing that laundry isn’t piling up. Plus, it makes it way easier to find something to wear in the morning!

2 Minute Rule - If You Can Take Care of a task in less than 2 Minutes, do it right away

Another sustainable habit is tackling small tasks as they arise. If something takes less than two minutes, do it right away! Whether you are completing a quick task or a small piece of a larger one, the 2-minute rule prevents procrastination and creates momentum.  Often the longer you put something off, the harder it feels to complete which can lead to feelings of overwhelm.  It could look like taking out the garbage, putting your shoes away, moving the sheets and towels to the dryer, refilling the ice cube tray, or replying to an email. This has become a helpful habit for me to keep me on track and my home tidy,

Keep Flat Surfaces Cleared

Flat surfaces like counters, tables, and shelves can quickly become a magnet for clutter. To prevent this, make a habit of regularly clearing these surfaces. Have a designated spot for everything, and put things away as soon as you are done using them. Your home will feel clean and tidy and that is a win, my friend!

Put Your Kitchen to Bed at Night

Finally, putting the kitchen to bed at night has been a game-changer for me. The kitchen can be one of the busiest areas in your home, and if you leave it messy at night, it can be stressful to wake up to in the morning. Make it a habit to put your kitchen to bed at night. Before going to bed, take 5 minutes to tidy, wipe down the counters, and fill the dishwasher. This will help you start your day off on the right foot and make breakfast prep much more manageable.

Becoming a homemaker doesn't have to be overwhelming. By implementing these simple sustainable habits, you can create a peaceful and organized home. Start with one task at a time.
